Internet services have been restored across the Orkney Islands after a damaged subsea cable was successfully repaired.

The disruption, which began last month, affected the fibre-optic cable linking Evie and Westray. The outage left hundreds of residents in communities including Sanday and Stronsay without internet access.

BT Group, which owns the subsea cable infrastructure, confirmed that repair work has now been completed.

The fault impacted around 500 customers across the North Isles. A specialist repair vessel was deployed, but operations were delayed until a sustained period of suitable weather allowed the work to proceed safely.

The damage has been attributed to long-term wear and tear, exacerbated by the harsh environmental conditions and rocky seabed in the Pentland Firth region.
John Ternus Set to Become Apple Inc. CEO Following Tim Cook’s Expected Step-Down This Fall
Apple Inc. has announced that CEO Tim Cook will step down from his role on September 1, with SVP of hardware engineering John Ternus set to succeed him as the company’s next chief executive.

Cook will transition into the role of executive chairman of Apple’s Board of Directors. The company said the leadership change was “approved unanimously” by the Board, adding that Cook will oversee a transition of responsibilities over the summer.

In a statement, Cook described his tenure as Apple CEO as “the greatest privilege” of his life, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead the company and work alongside its employees. He highlighted Apple’s continued focus on innovation and customer experience across its products and services.

Cook became CEO in 2011 following the death of co-founder Steve Jobs. Under his leadership, Apple expanded its ecosystem with products such as AirPods, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, while also strengthening its services segment through platforms like Apple Music and Apple TV+. While widely credited for operational excellence and supply chain efficiency, Cook has at times faced criticism for not embodying the product-led vision associated with Jobs.

His successor, John Ternus, joined Apple in 2001 and has long been involved in hardware engineering and product development. He became vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and was later promoted to a senior executive role in 2021. Ternus has played a key role in shaping Apple’s hardware roadmap and has been increasingly visible in recent product launches.

Ternus expressed gratitude for the appointment, saying he is “profoundly grateful” for the opportunity to continue Apple’s mission. He noted that he has worked under both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, describing it as a privilege to contribute to products that have reshaped how people interact with technology.
