Prompt measures announced to establish Gem Bank
The Presidential Secretariat has directed relevant government institutions to take immediate action on a detailed proposal submitted for the establishment of a Gem Bank in Sri Lanka.

The proposal, submitted on the 10th of this month to the President by Thilakasiri Vitarana, CEO of the Global Promotion International Institute, outlines a concept aimed at leveraging Sri Lanka’s gem resources to strengthen national wealth and economic positioning.

According to the proposal, the envisioned Gem Bank would maintain “gem reserves” in a manner similar to the country’s existing gold and foreign exchange reserves held by the Treasury. The initiative is positioned as a long-term strategy intended to enhance the value of Sri Lanka’s gem sector and contribute to broader national economic ambitions.

The Presidential Secretariat reportedly responded within 48 hours, instructing that the proposal be forwarded for further review and action by the relevant authorities. Accordingly, the documentation has been sent to the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development and the National Gem and Jewellery Authority for further evaluation.

The proposal now moves into the institutional review stage, where sectoral agencies are expected to assess its feasibility, regulatory implications, and potential economic impact before any policy decisions are considered.
