HUTCH Sri Lanka continues to strengthen its environmental sustainability commitments through the ongoing implementation of its rainforest restoration initiative at the Rajawaka Forest Reserve in Balangoda. The programme is carried out in partnership with Rainforest Protectors Sri Lanka and has now been implemented for the third consecutive year.

During the latest phase, approximately 500 native plants were introduced across half an acre of degraded forest land within the Rajawaka Forest Reserve. The use of indigenous species is aimed at supporting the regeneration of natural forest structure, improving habitat quality, and contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity.

Employee participation remained a key feature of the initiative, reflecting HUTCH Sri Lanka’s efforts to embed sustainability practices into its organisational culture and encourage long-term environmental responsibility across its workforce.

The initiative aligns with Sri Lanka’s broader national sustainability goals, as the country works towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Within this context, HUTCH Sri Lanka, as part of CK Hutchison Holdings—a Fortune Global 500 conglomerate—continues to play a role in supporting sustainable development through its operations and community-focused initiatives.

Complementing the rainforest restoration programme, HUTCH Sri Lanka has expanded its ESG initiatives across multiple areas, including renewable energy adoption, circular economy retail practices, e-SIM initiatives, reforestation activities, and environmental sanitation programmes. Collectively, these efforts contribute to the country’s broader transition towards a more sustainable future.

Commenting on the initiative, HUTCH Sri Lanka Chief Marketing Officer Hamdhy Hassen said the partnership reflects the company’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship.

“Our collaboration with Rainforest Protectors Sri Lanka demonstrates HUTCH’s continued dedication to environmental protection and climate resilience, aligned with the global ESG agenda of CK Hutchison Holdings. The actions we take today are vital in preserving Sri Lanka’s ecosystems for future generations and ensuring a healthier environment for all,” he said.
