The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) hosted the National Celebration of World Tourism Day 2026 on Friday (25) at Taj Samudra, Colombo, under the global theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”
Held from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., the event brought together representatives from the Government, tourism industry, private sector, academia, as well as technology and innovation communities.
The celebration focused on the growing role of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming tourism, improving visitor experiences and creating new opportunities for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
Tourism Start-Up Competition Highlights Innovation
A key feature of this year’s programme was the Tourism Start-Up Competition 2026, held under the theme “AI-Driven Innovation for the Future of Tourism.”
The competition received 52 applications across two categories — Tertiary Level and Commercial Level — highlighting the growing interest in technology-driven solutions among young innovators and tourism entrepreneurs.
Following an evaluation process, 25 applications progressed to the final stage, where participants presented their AI-based tourism solutions to an expert judging panel.
Six winners from each category were ultimately selected in recognition of their innovative contributions to the future of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. The winners were recognised during the World Tourism Day celebration, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their solutions and encourage wider innovation across the sector.
Accelerating Digital Transformation
The national celebration highlighted the importance of creating an innovation-focused ecosystem that enables tourism stakeholders to adopt emerging technologies and integrate them into their operations.
Through greater adoption of AI and digital solutions, Sri Lanka Tourism aims to strengthen the country’s competitiveness, improve destination management and service delivery, and provide visitors with more personalised experiences.
The programme also emphasised the importance of collaboration between the public sector, private businesses, academic institutions and technology communities in driving digital transformation.
Through these efforts, Sri Lanka Tourism reaffirmed its focus on developing a sustainable and digitally enabled tourism industry capable of responding to changing visitor expectations and emerging global opportunities.
