Eco Spindles (Pvt) Ltd and Gunadamin Elephant House have joined hands to promote environmental responsibility and heritage conservation through a sustainability-focused cleanup initiative at the sacred Ruwanwelisaya premises in Anuradhapura.
Held on 30 June 2026, the day after Poson Poya Day, the initiative brought together 60 volunteers, including employees from Eco Spindles and Elephant House, representatives from the Thilaka Eco Centre, and members of the local community.
The programme focused on responsible waste collection, segregation and recycling while creating awareness among pilgrims and visitors on the importance of protecting Sri Lanka’s culturally and spiritually significant heritage sites.
During the cleanup, volunteers collected approximately 350 kilograms of discarded plastic bottles from the surrounding areas. The collected plastic will be processed by Eco Spindles and converted into monofilaments and yarn, supporting the company’s efforts to promote a circular economy by transforming plastic waste into valuable resources.
Commenting on the initiative, Prashantha Malimbadage, CEO – Recycling at Eco Spindles, highlighted the importance of combining environmental protection with the preservation of culturally significant locations. He noted that responsible waste management and recycling can generate long-term environmental benefits while encouraging communities to actively participate in sustainable practices.
Dilshani Edirisinghe, Head of Marketing at Elephant House, said the company remains committed to creating a positive social impact through responsible initiatives. She added that the collaboration with Eco Spindles, volunteers and community partners helped promote sustainable behaviour among visitors while contributing to the protection of an important national heritage site.
