George Steuart & Company, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest mercantile establishments founded in 1835, has partnered with the Sri Lanka Natural History Society (SLNHS), one of the country’s oldest scientific organizations, to support initiatives that promote greater awareness and appreciation of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity and ecosystems.
With a history spanning nearly two centuries, George Steuart has been closely connected with Sri Lanka’s economic and commercial development. Similarly, the Sri Lanka Natural History Society, established in 1912, has dedicated over a century to advancing the study, documentation, and preservation of the island’s natural environment through research, education, and knowledge sharing.
Through this partnership, George Steuart’s CSR initiative, Steuart Senehasa, will support the SLNHS Monthly Lecture Series — a platform that brings together experts, scientists, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts to share knowledge on topics including wildlife, marine ecosystems, environmental conservation, and nature photography.
Commencing in May 2026, the lecture series will be presented as the ‘SLNHS Monthly Lecture – Sponsored by George Steuart & Company’, further strengthening efforts to educate communities and encourage greater understanding of Sri Lanka’s unique ecological landscape.
Commenting on the partnership, Group Director of George Steuart & Co., Varuni Fernando, said, “The Sri Lanka Natural History Society plays an important role in helping us better understand the natural environment that shapes our island. At George Steuart, we believe encouraging curiosity and greater awareness of Sri Lanka’s remarkable biodiversity, especially among younger generations, is an important part of safeguarding it for the future.”
The collaboration reflects George Steuart’s corporate philosophy of ‘Purpose Beyond Profit’, highlighting the company’s commitment to creating a positive social impact through initiatives that promote knowledge sharing, education, and environmental responsibility.
President of the Sri Lanka Natural History Society, Prof. Enoka Corea, said, “For more than a century, the Sri Lanka Natural History Society has worked to advance the study and understanding of the island’s natural life through knowledge sharing, research, and field observation.”
The partnership between George Steuart and SLNHS marks a continued commitment towards preserving Sri Lanka’s rich natural heritage while inspiring future generations to value and protect the country’s diverse ecosystems.
