The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (CIPM Sri Lanka) hosted Joni Simpson, Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), at a special engagement held on March 17 at the CIPM Auditorium in Colombo. The event was organised by the Standing Committee on Empowered Authority and National Role in HR.

The visit marked a significant milestone in strengthening collaboration between CIPM Sri Lanka and the ILO, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing the future of work through inclusive, sustainable, and globally aligned human resource practices.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Priyantha Ranasinghe, who reaffirmed the Institute’s national responsibility in driving HR excellence and its continued efforts to align local practices with international standards. He also outlined CIPM’s strategic direction, highlighting key initiatives aimed at strengthening the HR profession and contributing to national development.

Delivering the keynote address, Joni Simpson emphasised the growing importance of gender equality and workplace inclusion, drawing on over 26 years of international experience. She stressed the need for organisations to proactively address workplace malpractices while adopting progressive and forward-looking HR approaches, particularly in times of crisis and uncertainty.

She further highlighted the critical role of HR professionals in building resilient organisations and fostering equitable workplaces, sharing insights from her experience across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.

A key highlight of the event was an interactive discussion session that followed, where participants explored opportunities for deeper collaboration between CIPM Sri Lanka and the ILO. Both parties expressed interest in launching capacity-building programmes, labour law forums, and social dialogue initiatives aimed at strengthening employer–employee relations. The potential positioning of CIPM as a strategic HR partner to the ILO in Sri Lanka was also discussed.
Sri Lanka–Russia Business Council Hosts Members’ Night
The Sri Lanka–Russia Business Council (SLRBC), under the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, recently hosted its Members’ Night, bringing together distinguished dignitaries, business leaders, and stakeholders to celebrate and further strengthen the longstanding relations between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation.

The event was graced by Levan S. Dzhagaryan as Chief Guest. In his address, the Ambassador reaffirmed the strong and enduring ties between the two countries and highlighted the importance of continued cooperation amid evolving global challenges. He also noted ongoing discussions on potential collaboration in key sectors such as energy, while emphasising the need for sustained and constructive bilateral engagement.

Delivering the welcome address, Chamath Hettiarachchi underscored the deep-rooted friendship between Sri Lanka and Russia, built on mutual respect and long-standing cooperation. He highlighted opportunities for expanding partnerships in areas such as trade, tourism, agriculture, energy, logistics, education, and technology, noting that platforms like Members’ Night play a vital role in strengthening business connections and economic ties.

A key highlight of the evening was the felicitation of Dr. Saman Weerasinghe in recognition of his contribution to enhancing bilateral relations. In his remarks, he reflected on his longstanding association with the Russian Federation and expressed gratitude for the support extended by the Russian government and its people throughout his diplomatic career.
