Sathis Abeywickrama, Managing Director of Flexiprint (Pvt) Ltd, was recognised as a “Flexo Avenger” at the prestigious Flexo Summit Asia 2026, held recently in Bengaluru, India.
The “Flexo Avenger” recognition is presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of flexographic printing. Abeywickrama was featured and recognised during the Summit’s “Flexo Avengers: Converters Who Changed the Game” session, alongside other leading figures from across the region.
“While being recognised as a Flexo Avenger is indeed an honour and a privilege, it is also an acknowledgement of our continued commitment to innovation and customer focus throughout a successful journey spanning more than four decades. This journey has been marked by significant milestones and dates back to a time when specialised packaging required by Sri Lanka’s export industry, including tea bag tags and labels, was sourced from overseas,” said Abeywickrama.
Abeywickrama entered the printing industry in 1978 and established PrintUSA in 1989 before founding Flexiprint in 1994. The company was established to meet the growing requirements of Sri Lanka’s tea export industry, particularly for tea bag tags, tea envelopes, tagged pyramid mesh tea bags and specialty labels.
His journey into flexographic printing was driven by the need to address food safety and environmental concerns associated with conventional printing practices. At the time, traditional flexographic printing for tea tag production commonly relied on solvent- and dye-based inks. Since the printed tags and packaging were positioned close to the tea product, Abeywickrama identified the need for a safer and more environmentally responsible alternative.
“This thinking led Flexiprint towards the use of water-based inks, making us one of the pioneers in Asia to adopt the technology for tea packaging. Food safety, quality and environmental responsibility subsequently became central to the company’s approach,” Abeywickrama added.
Over the years, Flexiprint has developed into a specialised manufacturer of tea bag tags, tea envelopes, tagged pyramid mesh tea bags and specialty labels, serving customers across Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and North America.
The company’s growth and international reach represent a significant achievement for Sri Lanka’s manufacturing sector, while its early adoption of water-based printing technology has helped establish Flexiprint as a pioneering manufacturer in the specialised tea packaging and labelling industry.
