Janathakshan and The Coca-Cola Foundation Successfully Complete High-Impact Plastic Waste Management Project
Janathakshan GTE Ltd, with funding support from The Coca-Cola Foundation, has successfully concluded the “Strengthening Women and Youth Engagement in Informal Waste Management in Sri Lanka (SWYFT)” project, a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening plastic waste management systems and promoting a more inclusive circular economy.

Implemented from August 2024 to May 2026, the project covered the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, and Kurunegala, delivering long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits through improved recycling practices and community empowerment.

Promoting Sustainable Waste Management

The SWYFT project focused on three key objectives: increasing public awareness of responsible consumption and proper plastic waste disposal, creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for women and youth involved in waste management, and strengthening informal waste management systems to support a more resilient and inclusive circular economy.

Through education, infrastructure development, and skills training, the initiative helped improve recycling capacity while encouraging greater community participation in environmental conservation.

Major Milestones in Sri Lanka’s Recycling Sector

During its two-year implementation, the project achieved several significant milestones for Sri Lanka’s environmental sector.

Five women- and youth-led Material Collection and Processing Centres (MCPCs) were established and equipped with modern baling machines to improve plastic waste collection, sorting, and resource recovery.

A major highlight was the launch of Sri Lanka’s first hydro-powered Material Collection and Processing Centre, established in partnership with Thalawakelle Plantation of the Hayleys Group. The facility represents a pioneering example of collaboration between the private sector and civil society in advancing sustainable waste management.

Supporting Low-Carbon Waste Collection

To reduce the environmental impact of waste transportation, the project introduced electric mobility solutions specifically designed for waste collection operations.

A total of eight electric three-wheelers and 15 electric motorcycles were distributed to local waste collectors, enabling cleaner, more efficient logistics while lowering carbon emissions associated with plastic waste collection.

Empowering Women, Youth and Informal Waste Collectors

SWYFT also placed strong emphasis on improving the financial sustainability of informal waste management workers.

Comprehensive business plans were developed for all five Material Collection and Processing Centres, as well as 40 individual informal waste collectors, helping strengthen their long-term income generation and business resilience.

Additionally, 45 waste collectors received specialised capacity-building training to improve operational efficiency, strengthen entrepreneurial skills, and expand their participation in Sri Lanka’s growing circular economy.

Supporting Future Environmental Policy

As part of the initiative, the project also completed a National PET Plastic Ecosystem Study, providing valuable data and insights into Sri Lanka’s plastic recycling landscape.

The findings are expected to support evidence-based policymaking and guide future environmental interventions aimed at improving plastic waste management and strengthening the country's recycling ecosystem.

The successful completion of the SWYFT project highlights the impact of collaborative partnerships in addressing environmental challenges while creating sustainable economic opportunities. By empowering women, youth, and informal waste collectors, Janathakshan GTE Ltd and The Coca-Cola Foundation have contributed to building a stronger, more inclusive, and environmentally sustainable future for Sri Lanka.
