Emirates, the world’s largest international and most profitable airline, is seeking top-tier aircraft engineering and technical talent as part of its global recruitment drive, with Colombo set to host official recruitment roadshows on 19 and 20 May.

Interested candidates are required to register in advance via Emirates Group Careers. During the Colombo sessions, Emirates recruiters will provide details on job roles, remuneration, employee benefits and life in Dubai. Attendees will also have the opportunity to interact directly with the airline’s engineers to gain first-hand insights into career growth, professional development and working life at Emirates.

Aircraft technicians at Emirates are responsible for carrying out maintenance on both the airline’s fleet and third-party aircraft under the supervision of licensed aircraft engineers. Candidates applying for the role are expected to possess an approved apprenticeship in commercial aircraft maintenance or an equivalent qualification, along with a minimum of five years’ industry experience.

The airline offers a competitive tax-free salary package together with profit-sharing eligibility, comprehensive medical and life insurance, education allowances and heavily discounted flight tickets for employees, family members and friends. Staff also receive access to the Emirates Platinum Card, which provides exclusive discounts and privileges across thousands of retail outlets, hospitality venues, clinics and clubs both locally and internationally.

Emirates Engineering is recognised as one of the world’s most technologically advanced aircraft maintenance facilities. Approved under GCAA CAR V regulations, the division supports Emirates’ extensive Airbus and Boeing fleet — among the largest in the world — as well as aircraft from more than 30 international airlines through third-party maintenance agreements.

The Colombo recruitment event forms part of the Emirates Group’s broader global hiring initiative aimed at strengthening its technical workforce and enhancing maintenance standards across its international operations.
‘SME Nexus’ National SME Strategy Framework officially launched
The “National SME Strategy Framework 2026,” aimed at strengthening Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) — regarded as the backbone of Sri Lanka’s economy — was officially launched yesterday (13) under the patronage of Sunil Handunnetti, Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, and Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe.

The initiative seeks to remove structural barriers affecting SMEs, which account for more than 75% of registered businesses in the country, contribute 52% to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and employ around 45% of the national workforce.

Developed under the vision of “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life,” the framework is designed to transform entrepreneurs from sustaining day-to-day operations into building export-oriented businesses with high growth potential.

Built around a central strategic vision and 11 key pillars, the framework focuses on five core areas, including technology and digital empowerment through a unified SME database and digital business tools; institutional integration by aligning all government enterprise development agencies toward a common national objective; and improved service delivery through single-window service centres and the ‘SME Connect’ call centre.

The strategy also prioritises incubation and support for new businesses by simplifying business registration processes, while promoting market development and value chain integration to connect local products with global markets.

Additional focus areas include business intelligence research and impact assessment through the SIBA unit, recognition of ecosystem partners such as banks and chambers of commerce, and relationship management initiatives that will train development officers to provide direct guidance to entrepreneurs.

The framework further aims to improve access to finance through the establishment of a dedicated Growth Fund for priority sectors, while encouraging entrepreneurship education and culture at school and university level. It also proposes policy and regulatory reforms to remove legal and administrative obstacles affecting enterprise growth.
