Global pharmaceutical company Zydus Lifesciences and Sunshine Healthcare have announced a strategic joint venture to establish a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka, representing an investment of more than US$20 million.
Named Zydus Sunshine Lifesciences Pvt Ltd, the joint venture will develop the manufacturing facility within the Board of Investment (BOI) zone in Horana. The project will be constructed on nearly four acres of land, with the foundation stone laid on 26 June, officially marking the commencement of the development.
The new facility will manufacture pharmaceutical products for the Sri Lankan retail market, with the aim of improving access to high-quality medicines while strengthening the country’s pharmaceutical supply chain and reducing dependency on imported products.
The partnership brings together Zydus Lifesciences’ global expertise in pharmaceutical manufacturing, research, and technology with Sunshine Healthcare’s strong local presence and extensive healthcare distribution network. The collaboration is expected to support technology transfer, enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities, and create skilled employment opportunities within Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector.
The investment aligns with Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to encourage local production in essential industries, enhance economic resilience, and develop a stronger self-reliant healthcare ecosystem.
With expertise spanning pharmaceutical formulations, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), medical technology, diagnostics, animal healthcare, and consumer wellness, Zydus Lifesciences is expected to contribute its global manufacturing capabilities to the development and expansion of the Horana facility.
Through this landmark partnership, Zydus and Sunshine Healthcare aim to play a significant role in advancing Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector while improving the availability of essential medicines for the local market.
