Vietnam’s Vikyno has emerged as the market-leading 2-wheel tractor in Sri Lanka in 2025, according to an analysis of vehicle registry data by J B Securities, a Colombo-based equities brokerage.
In November, 99 Vikyno two-wheel tractors were sold, up from 53 in October and 33 in September, reflecting strong month-on-month growth. The brand is promoted online by Brown and Company and Singer Sri Lanka.
Japan’s Kubota was the second most popular 2-wheel tractor, with 54 units registered in November, 38 in October, and 22 in September. Kubota had long been a dominant name in Sri Lanka’s 2-wheel tractor market.
2-wheel tractors, commonly referred to in Sri Lanka as ‘Landmaster’ or ‘hand tractors’, are widely used by farmers for tilling land and, often, for hauling goods with attached trailers.
Historically, the UK-made Landmaster, designed by Sri Lankan scientist Ray Wijewardene in 1955, was the most widely used 2-wheel tractor on the island. It was created as a low-cost mechanization solution to modernize agriculture in Sri Lanka and remained a mainstay for decades.
