Kelani Valley Plantations (KVPL), a member of the Hayleys Plantations sector, has partnered with SPJ Creation to transform electronic waste into sustainable jewellery and value-added eco-friendly products.
The collaboration was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 12 March at KVPL, marking a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting Sri Lanka’s transition toward circular economy practices and low-carbon innovation.
Through the initiative, discarded electronic materials will be collected, repurposed, and upcycled into commercially viable and aesthetically designed products. The project also seeks to promote green entrepreneurship, women’s participation, and community engagement while creating new livelihood opportunities for local artisans and designers involved in sustainable production systems.
Electronic waste continues to be a growing environmental challenge globally and in Sri Lanka, where more than 20,000 metric tons of e-waste are generated annually with limited waste management systems in place. KVPL stated that the partnership offers a timely and innovative approach by converting waste streams into products with both economic and environmental value.
The initiative aligns with KVPL’s broader sustainability strategy focused on responsible waste management, environmental stewardship, circular economy practices, carbon reduction, biodiversity conservation, and efficient resource utilisation.
Commenting on the partnership, KVPL Director and CEO Senaka Alwattegama said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to combining innovation and sustainability to address Sri Lanka’s evolving e-waste challenge, while fostering sustainable design, creative enterprise, and long-term environmental value creation.
Doc990 introduces digital queue system for pharmacy services at Galle National Hospital
Doc990, a digital health solution operated by Digital Health (Pvt) Ltd — a subsidiary of Dialog Axiata PLC — has introduced a digital queue management system at Galle National Hospital, focusing on improving pharmacy service efficiency and patient flow.
The system has been deployed to address high patient volumes at one of the busiest healthcare facilities in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, where structured queue management is critical for smooth service delivery.
Under the new system, patients receive a queue number upon arrival and can track their position via digital display screens installed at pharmacy counters. The solution enhances transparency in patient flow, reduces congestion, and improves overall service coordination.
Hospital staff are also supported through a real-time backend system that enables efficient queue monitoring and management, helping to streamline pharmacy operations and better handle daily patient loads.
Commenting on the initiative, Doc990 CEO Janitth Pieris said the system reflects the company’s commitment to digitising Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector and improving accessibility through real-time, user-friendly solutions.
Galle National Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Lakmali Wijerathne noted that the system has helped reduce congestion at pharmacy counters while improving patient flow and minimising waiting times.
This implementation marks another step in Doc990’s ongoing expansion of digital healthcare infrastructure across Sri Lanka, supporting more efficient and connected patient services nationwide.
