SLT-MOBITEL mCash, Sri Lanka’s pioneering mobile money service, has announced the integration of GovPay, the Government’s digital payment platform aimed at transforming and modernizing public service delivery.

The partnership combines GovPay’s capability to process real-time payments to government institutions with mCash’s extensive reach across the country. Through this integration, citizens can conveniently make payments for more than 4,000 government services, including traffic fines and local authority taxes. The initiative supports Sri Lanka’s digital economy agenda by enhancing financial inclusion and improving access to public services through technology-driven solutions.

Mobitel customers can register for mCash by dialing #111#, or by downloading the mCash app on Android, iOS, or Huawei AppGallery. Once registered, users can instantly make secure government payments via GovPay. Customers may also visit any nearby Mobitel reload outlet to complete GovPay transactions over the counter.

GovPay, a collaborative initiative of the Ministry of Digital Economy, GovTech (formerly ICTA), and LankaPay, currently facilitates payments to more than 280 government institutions for over 4,090 citizen services. Through mCash, users can now settle utility bills, educational fees, healthcare charges, taxes, and a wide range of government-related payments. The platform also enables motorists to pay traffic fines instantly through the mCash app, anytime and anywhere.

The integration delivers significant benefits for citizens by providing convenient 24/7 access to government payment services. It also enhances the efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness of government revenue collection. Businesses, particularly SMEs, stand to benefit from simplified compliance processes and reduced transaction costs.

For corporates and industry stakeholders, the collaboration reflects the continued evolution of Sri Lanka’s digital payments ecosystem, reducing friction in government-related transactions while supporting operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Launched in 2013, mCash has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s leading mobile money platforms and celebrates its 13th year in operation in 2026. Over the years, the platform has developed into a trusted digital financial ecosystem serving both consumer and enterprise segments.

Today, mCash offers a comprehensive range of services including peer-to-peer money transfers, LANKAQR payments, cash withdrawals, utility and telecommunications bill payments, insurance and finance settlements, donations, healthcare and education payments, inward remittances, and scheduled payments. For businesses, the platform provides collection management services, biller aggregation, payment gateway solutions, LANKAQR acceptance, agency banking, and co-branded financial products, reinforcing its role as a key enabler of Sri Lanka’s digital payments landscape.
Kapruka Becomes Sri Lanka’s First Tech Company to Open Its Store to AI Agents
Kapruka Holdings PLC (CSE: KPHL) has become the first Sri Lankan technology company to launch a public Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, enabling AI agents to directly access its product catalogue, delivery services, and checkout functions. To encourage innovation on the platform, the company has also introduced the Kapruka Agent Challenge, inviting local developers to build AI-powered shopping experiences.

The MCP server, available at mcp.kapruka.com and listed on the official global MCP registry, allows AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude to interact directly with Kapruka’s systems. Through simple conversations, AI agents can now search products, check delivery availability to Sri Lankan addresses, place guest orders via secure payment links, and track purchases.

The initiative comes as the global retail industry increasingly embraces “agentic commerce,” a model in which consumers rely on AI assistants to discover, compare, and purchase products on their behalf. By opening its systems to AI agents, Kapruka positions itself at the forefront of this emerging trend, becoming one of the first e-commerce platforms in the region to support direct AI-driven transactions.

To demonstrate the platform’s capabilities and inspire further innovation, Kapruka launched the Kapruka Agent Challenge. The competition invites Sri Lankan developers to create practical and innovative AI shopping agents, with an Apple M4 Mac mini awarded to the winning entry. Developers from across the country have already begun building solutions, including conversational shopping experiences capable of communicating in Sinhala and Tanglish while guiding customers seamlessly from product discovery to checkout.

The MCP integration also supports Kapruka’s asset-light growth strategy by extending AI agent access to its key business segments, including Partner Central, its third-party marketplace; the Services Platform; and Cross Border, its USD-based e-distribution business operating through Amazon marketplaces in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

“We have spent two years re-adjusting the business for AI, and this is about getting ready for what comes next,” said Dulith Herath, Chairman and CEO of Kapruka Holdings PLC. “Shopping is starting to move from people clicking through websites to AI assistants doing it for them. We have made Kapruka one of the first stores in this part of the world that those assistants can actually buy from. Rather than keep it in-house, we opened it up and asked Sri Lanka’s developers to show us what they can build with it.”
